The version printed here is after Kassel, Landesbibliothek und Murhardsche Bibliothek, 4o, MS mus 125, where it appears anonymously. There is a broken-consort version with some nice lute divisions in the Walsingham partbooks, attributed to John Johnson. printed in Musica Britannica XL. A keyboard arrangement by William Byrd has survived in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. The second piece comes from a German printed collection Zacharias Ftillsack and Christian Hildebrands Ausserlesener Paduanen und Galliarden of 1607, in which the majority of the pieces are by English composers, notably William Brade. Johnsons pavan is followed by a related galliard by Johann Sommer, who composed companion pieces to other pavans or galliards in the collection, for instance a nice pavan to Dowlands "Susanna" galliard.
