One of the most popular and financially-successful songs ever published. It was was the first music sheet that sold one million copies. Some commentators claim that its success started the commercial exploitation of popular music, and thus the music industry itself. Thus it was used as the title of a history of popular music by Whitcomb (1972, 2nd ed 1994).

The song was used by Kern and Hammerstein in their musical, Show Boat (1927).

(4 minutes 54 in the eponymous recording ("After the Ball plus highlights from 'Vaudeville'") made by Joan Morris and William Bolcom for Nonesuch Records and first released on a 1974 LP.)

Published by Schott in 1917 or 1918 in a violin/piano arrangement, "Nach dem Ball: Blumenwalzer für Violine mit Pianoforte", rev. by Hugo Hartmann (see Monatsbericht (1918), p.4).
