The fours seasons are painted in vivid colors in this ten-minute palette for chorus and string quartet or piano. Spring -- The Romantic opens the work with the anticipation of blooming flowers, brilliant colors and the time for singing. Summer -- The Dancer almost leaps off the page with driving counterpoint between strings and voices, and through the words, "Ah, to be free to dance and sing the days and nights away." The thick harmonies of Autumn -- The Painter depict "woods that autumn day, that ache and sag, and all but cry with colour!" Winter -- The Dreamer exhibits the contrasts of a season that is "stark, mysterious, glimmering, shimmering, and dreaming, sleeping.".
